Two Coyotes on the lake.

Coyotes on Onondaga Lake

Most people driving down the Onondaga Parkway Saturday probaly didn't notice two figures out on the ice. At first glance even I though a couple of deer may have wandered onto the ice, but as I drove closer I knew exactly what they were...Coyotes! A rare sight to see during the daylight hours, but with the frigid temperatures we have had over the past week, both Coyotes and Fox spend more time searching for a meal including during the day and out in the open.
As the ground freezes, mice, their main food source, become much harder to catch so they look for other prey like deer, squirrells, grouse, rabbits, ducks and geese. Unfortunately, cats and small dogs are often taken too. At night, Coyotes are very brave and they wander into just about every backyard...even in the city. They do not attack humans so don't worry if you cross paths.

We will never get rid of Coyotes, as the population decreases from hunting or trapping, females have larger litters and then next year there is even more. Lack of food and a disease called mange, where they lose their fur, is natures control.

Coyotes have increased in population over the last 30 years and inhabit every state. They once preyed on just small game but they have evolved into pack hunters, like wolves and now take many healthy deer especially fawns. They average 30 to 50 lbs
