How do you spend the long cold upstate winters? Some go shopping while others ski, snow board or even ice skate. In Ellenville many members "jump" at every chance to "get into the air" with their hang gliders for some "air time". This was the case yesterday as at least a dozen pilots took to the air.
It may be slightly chilly setting up the glider, but once you're in the air most don't even notice the cold as the air flows around you body due to the airstream harness each pilot wears.
"Folks down here fly every month of the year, just to step away from hectic jobs for a while, or maybe find peace in the scenic surroundings from their lofty altitude," says a local pilot.
The reasons are as many as the different people who fly, but one thing I do know is that they are all fortunate that we live in a time with the technology that allows man to safely foot launch a high tech glider and soar with hawks and eagles thousands of feet above the valley floor.
Ellenvilles club has more than 200 members who may travel many hours to this site on any day to enjoy their favorite sport...even in winter!
