Can you please tell me if this is a normal right of passage in spring? Or what exactly was happening? I have never seen this before, but as I was driving home at dusk, Tuesday, May 26th, hundreds of little "smoke stacks" appeared to line the road and rise from trees. It was as if I was in science fiction movie. When I pulled over to get a closer look, I could tell they were bugs so I put the window down only long enough to snap a picture. This was on Allen Blvd, but I started to notice the columns appear on University and along M, north of the lake. Are they mosquitos hatching? I would love to solve the mystery!

I'm not sure what they are, but they are all over my patio. Which is a pain, b/c the weather is nice and I would like to be able to use my outdoor space without being swarmed. Someone called them "lake bugs" - doubt that's their real name.
