While walking by the capitol this morning, I noticed Bucky Badger, Smokey the Bear, and school children preparing to plant a tree and singing a song about trees.
A bit of Googling led me to the DNR website, where I learned it was an Arbor Day Public Tree Planting. The kids were from Weyauwega Elementary. The tree to be planted is a 10-year-old swamp white oak donated by the Wisconsin Nursery Association and was planted by The Bruce Company. It is part of an ongoing tree replacement program on the capitol grounds.
The song in the video is area musician Ken Lonnquist singing “Why Plant Trees.”
Bucky, per usual, had no comment for this report, although I wish I could ask him why he wears a Wisconsin shirt, while Smokey rejects the shirt but does choose to wear pants.
