Last time I helped with the shore cleanup with the Friends of Monona Bay I worked near John Nolan Drive. When we litter in downtown Madison (on the Square) a lot of the trash is emptied through the storm drains into Monona Bay.
Mostly I found:
Cigarette butts, cigar plastic tips, wrappers from cigarette packs, styrofoam, straws and paper cup covers and fishing line. But someone actually threw couch cushions out on the ice in Bay. It was not safe to try to get them. Hopefully they'll come into shore when the ice thaws and not just sink.
Next cleanup is in conjunction with the Earth Day Challenge on April 18th from 9AM to noon. Meet at Bernies Beach, 901 Gilson Street. If you have any questions or would like to participate, feel free to contact Nina Emerson at ninaj@wisc.edu or 608-258-1788 (h) 608-265-3411 (w).
