My name is Lori Green. I am writing to you in hopes that you will make my plea of injustice heard. In N.E. Oklahoma, there is a battle being waged between Attorney General Drew Edmondson and the Poultry Industry. This battle started in 2005 and has currently claimed its first victim. Due to the litigation costs, Willow Brooke Farms, a turkey company based in Springfield, MO, shut down its Oklahoma operations. They had only two farms operating in Ok.-both belonged to my parents, Larry and Linda Emerson. Mom and Dad have raised turkeys for 35 years. They are 59, have only 6 yrs to retirement, and now have no livelihood. Why? Drew Edmondson states in his case that the rivers, springs, and wells of the Illinois River Watershed are infested with biological pathogens that have created an imminent and substantial threat to human health. Well, hmmm. The state has yet to identify a single person who has become ill because of contact with water in the watershed. Over the years, Dad has willingly submitted samples from his springs, wells, and soil. All have been deemed within normal limits. So why was his livelihood taken away? And what about all the other Oklahoma poultry and cattle farmers? Dad may be the first, but fearfully, he may not be the last. When will Edmondson quit? When all poultry and cattle farming is banned from Oklahoma? Then what? Arkansas? Missouri? Recently, 2 members of the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission stepped forward stating that the claims made by the private attorneys Edmondson has hired to represent Ok. against the Poultry industry are "a joke" to the farmers in the Illinois Watershed. And that raises another important question--are Attorney General Drew Edmondsons actions designed to protect the Illinois River Watershed, or to protect the wallets of the contingent-fee attorneys who donate tens of thousands of dollars to the Democratic Attorneys General Association? Should Drew Edmondson be able to hire these same private lawyers to litigate big-money cases for the state? I am deeply disturbed by the possible impact of this lawsuit upon Ok. farmers. I am now seeing firsthand what the consequences are going to be. Mom and Dad lost their job despite their continued cooperation with all state and environmental programs. I assure you that Drew Edmondson has the cooperation of the farmers, so as an Attorney General, wouldn't he want to help Oklahomans fix their problems, rather than destroy the only livelihood most of them have ever known? My dad is the most honest and sincere man I know. He is being interviewed at your station tomorrow. Thank you for giving him a voice in this unfortunate situation. The pictures I included are of me, my dad, and my family on the farm. I am now 32 and my sister is 34. Our family has been farming for 35 yrs.

I'm sure that the miners in Pitcher made the same claim when they were foreced to close the mines in Tar Creek. The Ememersons are good people, but if the Illinois River is destroyed the livley hood of thousands for genrerations will be effected.

I fear that in what began as an earnest effort to "save" the Illinois River, lawmakers and concerned citizens alike have started on a witch hunt, making the Emersons their first victims. Regulation, not obliteration of the poultry industry is enough.

I think Drew is going overboard. What is he doing about the pollution in the Arkansas River? Why hasn't Drew gone after other industries? What about Commerce Oklahoma? The chicken plants that dump chicken parts in grand lake?

Go up to Grand Lake in August and see how nasty the water is. You will see that poultry waste is a problem in Oklahoma and a threat to our natural resources.

I am sorry your dad got fired

While I appreciate your situation and the loss of income to your parents... "state has yet to identify a single person who has become ill because of contact with water in the watershed" Does not mean it has not happened or will not happen.
