A little after noon in Gallup, a pilot flying a small aircraft faced an emergency situation with the plane.
Although near the airport, the pilot made a quick decision to land in the dry riverbed of the Rio Puerco between Interstate 40 to the North and Historic Route 66 to the South, both heavy with Saturday traffic.
The plane was damaged but at this time it appears that the pilot and a passenger were not seriously injured. There was no fire although emergency responders kept a close eye on the downed aircraft.
