April 11th, 2009. Saturday afternoon the weather forecasts were proven more than right as the 40% chance of thunderstorms erupted into a sudden downpour of hail, wind, and rain in Southeast New Mexico. The first round of hail came as a surprise, blowing in hard from the east almost sideways with reports of golf ball sized hail though I was only pelted with penny sized here. After a short break and an upgrade from a thunderstorm warning to a tornado warning round two began, this time sending larger than quarter sized hail flying in sideways from the west. Most yards were covered with the large chunks of ice until the storm relented a bit and simply poured rain. Yards were submerged under the standing water, looking like giant punch bowls with all the ice floating on top. Streets turned to rivers and everybody was thankful the Easter egg hunt had been that morning. After about 30 minutes of intense downpour the storm passed as quickly as it came and in true New Mexico fashion the sun was soon shining as if nothing had happened.
