ROSWELL: After an investigation into the cause of tuesday's grass fire that scorched 1,200 acres, New Mexico State Forestry officials determined that the fire was not intentionally set.
Dan Ware, the public information official for the forestry division, said, "The evidence presented at the scene led investigators to believe that the fire was set by some sort of equipment. The operator of the vehicle may not have been aware that he/she started a fire." Ware did not mention anything relating to a criminal investigation.
Several un-occupied structures were destroyed in the fire, including Raymond and Sheryl Prescott's storage shed and well house. Local fire officials said everyone is very fortunate since this fire could have been more costly because of 35 mph winds and dry conditions.
Forestry Officials are warning citizens in Southeast New Mexico to be extra careful right now, because even though its wet in the northern part of the state, it's dangerously dry in the southeast. Ware advised citizens to exercise "Situational Awareness." Know where your at, where your going, the weather/ground conditions, and if it's going to be safe. Make sure if you work with chains, that none of them are dragging off the side of your truck, etc...
Ware also strongly advised rural residents of southeast new mexico to keep up on your property-keep weeds cut low near the road, and remove any dry debris around your home and other structures.
