Every full moon, The White Sands National Monument stays open and hour later (until 11pm) and has a special presentation at the "amphitheater" at 8:30pm. We attended the full moon night on June 18, 2008, and came to the sands a little early to eat dinner and enjoy ourselves on the dunes. The weather was a warm 75-80 degrees with a slow breeze. The breeze quickly blew in heavy rainclouds that only let down a few drops of water. It was a magnificent night with a sunset that consisted of fantastic colors, air that smelled of rain, and a full moon that was surreal in how large it appeared. Top it off with the special presentation of Freddie Kaydahzinne and son, from Mescalero, singing various Apache traditional songs as the moon rose, and it was an evening never to forget.
