Channel: Mother's Day

My mother Bridget Montoya is 83 years old with osteoporosis and macular degeneration. She is one of the strongest people I've ever known. Within a 9 month period she lost 3 of her loved ones. Beginning with a devastating phone call on January 20, 2007 that her oldest son Gilbert had died. He had been in a nursing home for 18 years due to a gunshot wound to the head. Four months later May 5th 2007 she lost her husband Vincent of almost 61 years due to congestive heart failure. Five months after that her father Manuel Trujillo passed away October 16th 2007 from complications of pneumonia just shy of his 104th birthday. She is a strong wonderful loving mother, grandmother, great and great great-grandmother who has always put others needs and wants before her own. Not only were these loved ones taken from her but while my dad was really sick they had no choice but to sell their home they lived in for 50 years and raised their 6 children. My mother taught us the true meaning of unconditional love and to always look for the good in people. She is the perfect example of a Godly woman. She gets up in the morning praying and goes to bed praying and thanking the Lord for her many blessings. Her love for the Lord has inspired us to want to have the same relationship she has with our Heavenly Father. Growing up she would get up early and make sure we ate before starting our day. My dad was injured shortly after he got out of the army. He had to have several back surgeries so my mother had to work cleaning hotel rooms and homes. She always made sure she was home before we were and always had food on the table. She told us that the choices we made in life would determine who we would become. We didn't have much but she never made us feel like we were lacking anything because she showed us so much love. The last 6 months of my fathers’ life she hardly left his side making sure he would eat, take his medicine, and made him as comfortable as possible. At times she would be so overwhelmed by my fathers needs, she would neglect her own. While on hospice my mother was by his side to the very end sleeping next to him in his hospital bed telling him how much she loved him and that it was ok to go home with the Lord. She may be short in stature but a giant in the eyes of every one who knows her. Everywhere she goes people who don’t even know her always smile at her and tell her how beautiful she is. She truly is an inspiration to us all. Because of her example we are who we are today. This is why I feel she is the most deserving of this contest. Her loving daughter, Betty
