This past weekend, Winter Doncheske did a lot of building. As a Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity Partner family, she worked on the home that will one day be hers, but she also built some new relationships with her home's sponsor, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
On Saturday, she worked alongside members of Cairo's Christ Lutheran Church to form and pour her home's crawlspace walls. After a week of rains, all the volunteers knew the work site would be muddy. But Winter and the others were prepared and got the work done.
"I didn't want to be behind, before we got started, " she commented.
On Sunday, she was once again putting in hours as a Habitat family. She, and other volunteers, including Hastings Habitat board member, Jason Haase, participated in Thrivent Builds activities at Kidz Explore.
The fraternal organization brought their Thrivent Mobile, which is like a museum on wheels. It featured videos and displays about families like Winter's that want a chance at improving their housing situation.
Along with the mobile, Thrivent had games, a hammering contest and more. Thrivent staff and volunteers were in Kearney because each of the tri-cities Habitat affiliates have homes sponsored by them this year. It is part of a national effort, in which over 300 Thrivent Builds sponsored homes will be built by local Lutherans.
